Description

Tubersol (Tuberculin Purified Protein Derivative Mantoux) used in a screening test (the tuberculin skin test) to determine if a person has been infected by the bacteria that cause tuberculosis, Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease that can affect any part of the body, but is most often associated with an infection of the lungs. You are most likely to need this test if you have been around someone with TB, have a weakened immune system due to certain medications or diseases, have had abnormal chest x-ray results.

Additional information

The tuberculin skin test involves 2 steps, and will require 2 visits to your doctor's office. During the first visit, a small amount of Tubersol is injected into the topmost layers of skin on the inner forearm, causing a small bump. This product contains proteins from the TB causing bacteria, which provoke a localized skin reaction in individuals that have been infected with these bacteria. It is important that you return to your doctor's office after 48 to 72 hours, where a trained health-care professional will evaluate if you have had a significant reaction to Tubersol.

WARNING: A false positive test can occur in persons who have been vaccinated with the BCG vaccine (vaccine that protects against TB) or who have been infected with non-tuberculosis mycobacteria. A false negative test can occur if the body's immune system is immature (in infants) or impaired, due to infections or drugs that suppress or lower the immunity.

In addition to its desired action, this medication may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause redness, itching, bruising or pain at the site of injection.
It may cause allergic reactions.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to the test or any component of the formulation. Do not use in case of severe reaction to a previous tuberculin skin test, documented active tuberculosis or a clear history of treatment for tuberculosis infection or disease, or extensive burns or eczema (a skin condition).

Taking this medication during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. There is no available data regarding the harm of this medication for the fetus, therefore it is not recommended to use it. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.

Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.

Warning

Each person may react differently to a treatment. If you think this medication may be causing side effects (including those described here, or others), talk to your doctor or pharmacist. He or she can help you to determine whether or not the medication is the source of the problem.
