Description
Protopic (Tacrolimus) is an immunosuppressant agent. It is typically used for the treatment of moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (a condition that makes your skin red and itchy) in immunocompetent (healthy) patients not responsive to conventional therapy or when conventional therapy is not appropriate. It may also have other uses.

Protopic (Tacrolimus) is typically applied twice daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. Wash hands before and after application. Use the smallest amount of ointment needed to control the signs and symptoms of atopic dermatitis. Do not use with occlusive dressings. Do not bathe, shower, or swim right after application. Limit sun exposure during the treatment period. Burning at the application site is most common in first few days, improves as atopic dermatitis improves. Limit application to involved areas. Continue as long as signs and symptoms persist, discontinue if resolution occurs, re-evaluate if symptoms persist >6 weeks. WARNING: This medication has been associated with rare cases of malignancy (cancer), therefore, it should be limited to short-term and intermittent treatment using the minimum amount necessary for the control of symptoms and only on involved areas. Use in children <2 years of age is not recommended, only the 0.03% ointment should be used in children ages 2-15. In addition to its desired action, Protopic (Tacrolimus) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause acne, cysts (closed pouches of tissue filled with materials such as air, fluid, or pus), diarrhea It may cause fever, flu-like symptoms (e.g., congestion, coughing, or sneezing) Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to tacrolimus or any component of the formulation Taking Protopic (Tacrolimus) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Protopic (Tacrolimus) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
