Description
Tasigna (Nilotinib) is an anticancer agent. It is typically used to treat chronic myeloid leukemia (a type of cancer of the bone marrow — the spongy tissue inside bones where blood cells are made). It may also have other uses.
Additional information
Tasigna (Nilotinib) is typically used twice daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. Take it this drug on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or at least 2 hours after a meal. WARNING: Tasigna can cause a serious heart problem. Your heart function may need to be checked before and during treatment with this medicine. Tasigna may result in elevations in liver enzymes, use with caution in liver impairment, monitor liver function tests periodically. Tasigna can cause hypophosphatemia (low level of phosphate in the blood), hypokalemia (low level of potassium in the blood), hyperkalemia (high level of potassium in the blood), hypocalcemia (low level of calcium in the blood), and hyponatremia (low level of sodium in the blood). Correct electrolyte abnormalities prior to initiating Tasigna and monitor periodically during therapy. In addition to its desired action, Tasigna (Nilotinib) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause low blood counts, headache, tiredness, liver problems, QT prolongation (a type of irregular heartbeat) It may cause hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), hypertension (high blood pressure), sleep disorders. It may cause abdominal pain, constipation, decreased appetite, nausea, rash, fatigue, pruritus (itchy skin). Contraindications: If you are allergic to nilotinib or any ingredients of the medication, if you have long QT syndrome (a type of irregular heartbeat), if you have low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood that cannot be corrected. Taking Tasigna (Nilotinib) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Tasigna (Nilotinib) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
