Description
Theo ER (Theophylline extended-release) is a bronchodilator agent. It is typically used to treat airflow obstruction in patients with chronic asthma (a condition in which your airways narrow and swell and may produce extra mucus) or chronic lung disease (e.g., chronic bronchitis (inflammation of the lining that carries air to and from your lungs) and emphysema (damage to the walls of the air sacs (alveoli) of the lungs)). It may also have other uses.

Theo ER (Theophylline extended-release) is typically given once daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. It should be taken with food or within 2 hours of a meal, to make sure that the medication is properly absorbed by the body. Swallow the tablets whole with 120 mL to 180 mL of water. This ensures the medication reaches your stomach quickly. WARNING: Use with caution in patients with heart disease as it may increase the risk of arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeats). Use with caution in patients with liver disease, seizure disorders (a sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbance in the brain), hypertension (high blood pressure), hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). Elderly patients are at a higher risk of developing severe side effects (careful monitoring is required). In addition to its desired action, Theo ER (Theophylline extended-release) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause tachycardia (fast heart rate), restlessness, agitation, difficulty sleeping. It may cause nausea, headache, loss of appetite, stomach pain. It may cause weakness or tiredness. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to Theophylline or any component of the formulation, coronary artery disease (a condition that affects your heart), peptic ulcers. Taking Theo ER (Theophylline extended-release) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Theo ER (Theophylline extended-release) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
